ChatGPT will write your Valentine's Day cards, but we are not ready for the AI advancement
Couples for whom the spark may have gone from their relationship will find it a little easier to rekindle the romance this Valentine's Day. Moonpig, the online customised greetings card retailer, is trialling using ChatGPT to generate personalised messages or poems for loved ones. ChatGPT is a generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool, developed by San Francisco company OpenAI, in which Microsoft recently invested billions of dollars. In the few months since a beta version of ChatGPT was released to the world, it has rapidly become an integral part of many people's lives. Estate agents in the United States now say they can't live without the tool's automation to write up property descriptions.
I used ChatGPT to make a Valentine's Day card and poem - and the results were horrific
I'm a professional journalist with a deep scepticism of how emotionless AI could be used in the arts, but I decided to put my doubts to one side and see if the likes of ChatGPT and DALL-E could help me whip up some last-minute Valentine's Day inspiration. After all, isn't using robots to save our disorganised butts the real meaning of Valentine's Day? Of course it is, so I decided to see if I could get a romantic love poem and some cover art ready for a Valentine's Day card using artificial intelligence tools in the form of the ChatGPT chatbot, and the DALL-E AI art generator. And the results were... horrific. I have to start by reiterating that I have never used AI tools before today, so do bear with me if I sound a little noobish.
AI love you! Moonpig enlists the help of ChatGPT to write personalised Valentine's Day cards
Not all of us are skilled in the language of love, and when it comes to Valentine's Day, there is all the more pressure to find the right words to express how we feel. Fear not, as artificial intelligence (AI) is here to turn your greetings card into a work of Shakespeare, or at least Enrique Iglesias. Moonpig has revealed it is looking into integrating ChatGPT - the AI chatbot taking the world by storm - into its online platform. This means that customers will be able to use the large language model to write a personalised message for inside their card. OpenAI says its ChatGPT model has been trained using a machine learning technique called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). This can simulate dialogue, answer follow-up questions, admit mistakes, challenge incorrect premises and reject inappropriate requests.
Celebrate Dad with a Google Doodle Father's Day card
Sunday is Father's Day, the day we show a little extra love for Dad, one of the figures in our lives who helps prepare us for life. But life has thrown us a curve ball this year, making traditional Father's Day gifts tricky. With the threat of coronavirus still hanging heavy in the air, keeping safe is paramount on everyone's mind. Many may be reluctant to get too close to other shoppers looking for a card or tie they might have to deliver while practicing social distancing. Google understands this predicament and has created an interactive Doodle that lets you create your own digital art from your heart and then ship it off to the special dad in your life, all from the safety of your computer.
